3 speakers at locavore potluck Thursday

Hawai’i Farmers Union United, Mauna Kahalawai Chapter will present its monthly locavore potluck from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at The Mill House Restaurant at Maui Tropical Plantation.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; dinner will served from 6 to 6:45.

Guest speakers include Amjad Ahmad, Harriet Witt and Ian Bender.

An Oahu resident, Ahmad received his Ph.D. in natural resources and environmental management from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. In 2011, he joined the Sustainable and Organic Agriculture Program at UH-Manoa. His work aims to support sustainability, food and nutritional security and self-sufficiency in Hawaii.

Witt, astronomer to the Maui Film Festival’s Celestial Cinema, is an international award-winning science writer. She will present a talk titled “How to Think Like a Plant.”

Bender is the owner of Ship to Shore Custom Builders. He will discuss various structures appropriate for agricultural uses.

The evening will also include a locally grown food dish by Chef Jaime Tourin of Maui Tempeh Co., plus live entertainment by Hanalei Colleado, prize giveaways and networking.

Attendees are asked to bring a dish to share (enough for six people). Otherwise, cost is $10 for Hawai’i Farmers Union United members; $12 for nonmembers.

This is a waste-free event. Attendees are asked to bring their own plate and utensils, or they will be provided for a fee.
