Yard sale to benefit Somos Ohana Nicaragua
Oct 14, 2017 @ 8:00 am. - 1:00 pm.
Somos Ohana Nicaragua, a Pukalani-based nonprofit that builds schools and provides scholarships and health services in rural northwest Nicaragua, will be holding a fundraiser yard sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in Kula Kai at 51 Mano Drive.
Items for sale include art, antiques, collectibles, household goods, baby things and clothing, plants, baked goods and more.
The money raised will go to the third wing of the regional high school at La Carreta in Chinandega province built by the group in 2015, said Charlotte and Dan Flavin, founders of the organization that has worked in Nicaragua for 17 years. There had never been a high school in La Carreta; currently more than 100 secondary students are receiving classes daily, with another group from more remote areas coming Saturdays.
The Nicaraguan government has supplied teachers, and the computer classroom and computers were provided by a grant from the Bellvue, Wash., Rotary Club and Seattle’s Bertschi School, respectively.
In the future, the community served by the school wants to add farming technology to the curriculum, and the third wing is designed to contain a kitchen for preparing produce for sale grown at the school.
Volunteers with skills to share are always welcome to work with the organization. Spanish language ability, while desirable, is not necessary. A free weekly Spanish class is offered in Pukalani for people planning to go with the group. Volunteers pay their own way to the Central American country and a modest daily fee to the families with whom they board.
