Foodie news for jazz and blues buffs
The third annual Maui Jazz and Blues Festival is sweeping the island through Sunday with iconic rhythm and blues sounds of New Orleans. Esteemed music writer Jon Woodhouse has penned a story on the stellar lineup, on Page 3.
This piece offers insights on what you can eat when listening to the cool jazz. For instance, Maui’s own Ocean Vodka will make appearances at both Five Palms in Kihei and Grand Wailea.
Five Palms will jump from 5 to 8 tonight with Lenny Castro, Don Harrison and Delfeayo Marsalis, says festival organizer Ken Martinez Burgmaier.
“We’ll have sushi and drink specials running all the way from 3 to 11 p.m.,” says General Manager Moki Chong Kee. “And, we have a number of new menu items as well.”
Indulge in the new Pele’s lobster dip with crispy won ton chips. Savor the poached pear salad with fresh arugula and Maytag blue cheese; and share a platter of chow fun carbonara with fresh local-style noodles with cream sauce, parmesan cheese and shaved black truffles.
Other new entrees include chicken Paillard in port wine reduction with boursin mashed potatoes; and mahimahi dynamite baked with crab aioli crust over sushi rice. Meat lovers may also sink their teeth into ribeye steak or braised lamb shank. Tickets are $20. Call Five Palms at 879-2607.
Grand Wailea will also set the jazz stage from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday with the festival’s music lineup; and you may buy hot dogs and hamburgers.
On Sunday, Marsalis and Donald Harrison will play from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the Sunday Jazz Brunch at Grand Wailea. Sip champagne and enjoy poached snapper, Peking duck salad, spicy popcorn shrimp, seafood and salad bars, prime rib, sushi and sashimi, and delectable desserts.
