School is in full swing, temperatures have cooled, and pumpkins are ripe for picking.
Fall is also the time of year that kindergarten through 8th grade students at Carden Academy will get ready for their fifth annual Fall Festival from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on the Pukalani campus.
The school grounds will be transformed into a pumpkin patch, petting zoo, carnival with games and prizes, and arts and crafts area. There will also be a book fair, entertainment and local food.
Admission of $1 benefits nearby Pukalani Elementary School’s BackPack Buddies program to provide weekend food for needy kids.
“We look forward to our Fall Festival every year,” says Nina Sato, headmaster. “It’s an opportunity to open our doors to the community and let them visit our campus and meet our wonderful students. The children work hard at putting this event together with the help of their parents, and we can’t wait to share it with everyone.”
Farmer Tom’s Kula-grown Organic Pumpkin Patch will be at the heart of it all. Large quantities of organic pumpkins – all shapes and sizes -will be for sale for creating your jack-o-lanterns. Families will enjoy strolling through the picture-perfect patch and picking the right one to haul home for carving and pie-making.
A vibrant market will sell fresh, local produce and flowers from vendors Evonuk Farms and Kula Fields. You will also find Zane’s Ono Jams and Jellies and Maui Preserved by Carden Academy students.
Buy homespun products made from Carden Garden such as home baked goodies, and grab a “dinner in a bag” and assemble a meal at home with Carden Garden pesto, pasta, salad and bread included.
This year, two local food trucks will fill the center lot. Outrigger Pizza will serve its namesake woodfired pizza pies. Top sellers are the spinach delight, the Italian sausage and the lilikoi-pork pizza.
Three’s Food Truck will roll in with pohole fern and mushroom poke, Caprese salad with Kula mac-nut pesto, coconut-crusted shrimp, panko-crusted ahi sushi rolls, and kalua pork quesadilla with peanut ginger slaw, spiced Maui Gold pineapple chutney, and cilantro lime aioli; and local style hurricane fries. Maui Oma Coffee, Da Local Banana and Shaka Pops will also be on hand.
