Ninth annual Chili Cook-off to heat up Maui Fair

Some of Maui’s top chefs will square off against the Maui Fire Department Sunday in the ninth annual Maui County Department of Fire & Public Safety Chili Cook-off Fundraiser.

Maui Fair will set the stage at the Events Arena, on the grassy area fronting the Coach Soichi Sakamoto Pool. The action will heat up from 4 to 6 p.m.

The big news is, all who purchase samples of the chili may vote for their favorites in the People’s Choice Award, as well as qualify to win a round trip for two courtesy of Alaska Airlines anywhere it flies.

Chef contestants are Sheldon Simeon of Mala Wailea, Chris Schobel of Hula Grill Kaanapali and Eric Morrissette of Fleetwoods on Front St., who will compete against the firemen in styles such as Traditional Back Draft, Hazmat Freestyle, Wildland Brush Fire and Veggie.

Judging will be based on Taste, Accuracy of the entry in the participating category, Originality and Presentation. The judges are Mayor Alan Arakawa; Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui’s Executive Chef Tylun Pang; Hawaii USA FCU’s Royce Fukuroku; Maui Culinary Academy’s Chris Speere; and The Maui News Dining Editor Carla Tracy. The event emcee will once again be Cindy Paulos, longtime radio personality for KAOI on Maui.

Arrive early, as the mayor’s wife, Ann Arakawa, ill be cooking chili and offering it for a $2 donation at 3:15 p.m. A color TV will be given away at 3:45 p.m. Then the final presentation, awards and sampling will commence starting at 5 p.m. Sunday.

“Come sample these delicious creations for a donation of $2, with all of the proceeds benefitting Shriners Hospital for Children’s Patient Transportation Fund,” says Maui Fair’s Managing Director Sherri Grimes.
