Grand Wailea bee apiary abuzz; honey beats out New York hotel
Grand Wailea’s rooftop apiary with 10 beehives, has been buzzing with sweet nectar since it was set up in 2009.
This year, its sister property, the Waldorf Astoria New York, also started its own rooftop apiary. That’s when a friendly banter between the resorts started on whose honey is best.
This was eventually settled during National Honey Month with the Waldorf Battle of the Bees media event in New York.
New York’s top media attended with representatives from TIME, Food Network, Honest Cooking, Food & Wine, Travel + Leisure, New York Post, Food Arts and more. Grand Wailea won the honey raw tasting media award 17 to 11. The Grand’s chefs Eric Faivre and Mike Lofaro, and landscaping director James Heid attended. The honey is used in all restaurant menus at the Grand, in the Beehave cocktail at Botero Bar, and in bottles at Cafe Kula.
