Farm to Table

George Kahumoku not only brings home the bacon with his masterful, Grammy Award-winning music, he knows how to take it from farm to table.

That’s because the Maui slack key legend is also a farmer in Kahakuloa with his wife, Nancy Kahumoku, and he comes from a large family of Hawaiian hunter-gatherers on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Called the “Renaissance Man,” he also stars in the “Seeds of Aloha” documentary that premiered last year, is author of and did the artwork for “A Hawaiian Life,” and he taught students at Lahainaluna High School for 20 years, where he honed his talents as an expert storyteller.

He’ll bring all of these skill sets to Andaz Maui at Wailea later today. A Evening With George Kahumokuu features his farm fresh fare cooked by resort chefs and island music with help from Dennis Kamakahi, Ukulele Boyz and Sterling Seaton.

There will be a slideshow and talk story session, and a good time will be had by all at this rare event. In fact, attendees may choose from pupu and show; or a sit-down dinner and show.

“We’re a small, sustainable farm in the West Maui mountains,” says Kahumoku. “We have chickens and ducks, goats and sheep, mini-horses, and we raise all manner of fruits and vegetables.

The musician also hunts for deer about once a week, raises pigs in Haiku as well as Kahakuloa Valley, and his son captures wild boar on the Big Island, lets them live free range on fenced land, and hand feeds them sweet macadamia nuts.

“On the farm, we grow Calamansi limes, pak choy, eight varieties of taro, broccoli, you name it. We also feed our animals our own high-protein grains.”

At the dinner show, which rolls out today at 5:30 p.m., attendees may savor Okinawan spinach salad with roasted carrots, ginger and lilikoi seed chevre from the farm, Kona cold water lobster with lobster mushrooms, basil, yuzu kosho and uni (sea urchin); and lilikoi cheesecake with shortbread.

There is also a pupu and show package that starts at 6:30 p.m. today featuring local teriyaki deer with bao buns; kalua pork with breadfruit crostini and li hing mui preserved salted lemon and preserved fruit; loco moco with house-smoked boar and beef patty with watercress, quail egg and pineapple fried rice; deviled eggs, Hawaiian-salt potato crisps and micro green; and Kahakuloa sweet potato and corn fritters with a side of kim chee aioli.

While Kahumoku regularly performs at the Napili Kai Beach Club in West Maui as part of his Wednesday night Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key show, next week he’ll start a 12-city tour of the Mainland with Ledward Kaapana.

Also coming up, Kahumoku will be in the thick of the new Hawaiian Cowboy BBQ at Mendes Ranch near his Kahakuloa farm. The weekly hoedown debuts Feb. 14 and runs from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. every Friday through Sept. 26.

Hawaiian cowboys will show you rodeo roping, cattle cutting and branding; and take you on a hay ride to the ocean. Kahumoku will sing and talk story and guests may kick up heels with line dancing.

Ron Panzo of LuLu’s Surf Club & Grill in Lahaina will cook li hing mui barbecue ribs, baked beans and more. Rest assured that the food will be farm fresh.
