Taste of School Gardens returns to Hotel Wailea
The second annual Taste of School Gardens will be held at Hotel Wailea from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 8. It’s a benefit for the Grow Some Good school garden programs that are planting seeds around the island for our next generation of farmers, chefs, teachers and scientists.
“This year, we are featuring nine chef stations (up from five stations last year),” says event organizer Kirk Surry. “We’ll have music by BrownChicken BrownCow. Emcee will be Dean Wong, the executive director of Imua Family Services. It’s going to be one good ol’ fun hoedown in Wailea!”
Spago chef Cameron Lewark will make Maui chopped 20 vegetable salad; Roger Stettler of Four Seasons Resort Maui will represent Ferraro’s Bar e Ristorante with rotisserie-roasted island catch; and school garden herbs-and-vegetable salad; along with tortellini in brodo.
“The chefs really stepped up this year to offer way more vegetarian options from gardens,” says Surry. “Wine and beer are sponsored by Maui Brewing Co., Young’s Market and Southern Wine & Spirits.”
Pair beverages with Fabiani’s green papaya steak salad; and grilled skirt steak with cherry tomatoes, mint and macadamia nuts.
Capische? and Il Teatro will present pumpkin gnocchi with garden vegetables, sage, lavender and brown butter; and kampachi crudo with fried capers and uni vinaigrette. The soon-to-open Market by Capische will present kale salad with crispy bread fruit and Surfing Goat Dairy cheese. Other participants are Cafe Carmen, Monkeypod Kitchen, Private Maui Chef and Outrigger Pizza Co.
Advance cost is $89; and $99 at the door. For tickets, visit www.growsomegood.org.
