Celebration of the arts
For the 22nd year, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua will be puttin’ on the Hawaiian culture at Celebration of the Arts – this time moving the three-day festival to Mother’s Day weekend.
Top Hawaiian artisans, educators, cultural practitioners and musicians will be presented. Attendees are encouraged to bring family matriarchs to experience this cultural event, create their handmade Mother’s Day gifts and reconnect with the host culture.
The Celebration Luau and Show is unlike any other luau on the island, bringing together traditional Hawaiian foods, star-studded entertainment and talent, harkening back to a more nostalgic Hawaii.
It will be staged from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 10, in the resort’s Pavilion Courtyard with Hawaiian delicacies such as kalua pig, chicken long rice, poi, pohole fern shoots with Kula tomato and Maui onions, and cucumber namasu mixed with dried shrimp.
The seafood station will feature opae or fresh water shrimp, ahi poke, opihi or limpets and he’e poke with sliced octopus. Hot selections include kalua turkey steamed in the imu or the underground oven, along with beef and pork laulau, squid luau with coconut milk. Desserts will include kulolo taro pudding, haupia or coconut pudding with fruit compote and hot malasadas or Portuguese donuts with hot chocolate fudge and other toppings. Other event highlights on Saturday, May 10, include the Waters of Kane awa ceremony at 8:30 a.m. in the Pavilion Courtyard; a Green Harvest Tour of the organic gardens with Executive Chef John Zaner at noon; and Tasting Teas of the Islands at 12:45 p.m.
The Celebration After-Hours Party will commence that Saturday evening from 9 to midnight in the Alaloa Lounge and is complimentary for adults.
Kekuhi Kealii Kanaka’ole and Kaumakahiwa Kanaka’ole will take the stage with impromptu performances in a fun-filled jam session that reflects the spirit of aloha, for which the islands are renowned.
This year’s event theme is “Ko makou alanui kupuna . . . Our Ancestral Paths.” The thought-provoking, interactive sessions will give a nod to the days of ancient and nostalgic Hawaii. Kainoa Horcajo of Andaz Maui will speak on the hospitality industry; and island films, such as Richard Roshon’s “From The Eyes of the Kayak,” will be screened in the ballrooms.
The event culminates with the all-you-can-eat Mother’s Day brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 11 in the Terrace Restaurant.
