It used to be called “Taco Tuesdays.” But then, inspired new ideas starting jumping at the chef like refried black beans sizzling and popping in a frying pan.

“We’re offering so much more than just tacos now, so we have decided to change the name to Tex-Mex Tuesdays,” says Jonathan Herman, owner of the landmark Charley’s Restaurant & Saloon in Paia.

“We’ve not only brought the promo back, but we’ve upgraded and improved it. Diners can get full platters now, rather than just a taco or two.”

So come to the popular restaurant, starting at 5 p.m. for dinner each week on Tuesday, and get your fill of the best Tex-Mex cuisine this side of the Rio Iao. Executive Chef Chewy Cereceres makes taco salads in crisp tortilla bowls, beefy burritos and soft-or-hard shell taco platters.

Tejano-inspired fillings you may order in any of the above dishes include kalua pork with smooth guajillo mole; and green-chili and cilantro chicken.

Cereceres also does island fillings, such as coconut-lemongrass mahimahi; and veggie with grilled zucchini, sweet corn and local pumpkin.

Before coming to Charley’s, Cereceres was executive chef at Hali’imaile General Store. He’s greatly improved on the menu offerings and consistency.

“Chewy has met our goal at Charley’s to provide quality, local and fresh food at affordable prices for the people who live in Maui full time and for the visitors that join us each year,” says Herman.
