Dive into casual fun at Beach House Bar & Grill in Kahana

No shoes. No shirt. No probrem! Situated poolside and oceanfront at the Sands of Kahana resort, the Beach House Bar & Grill is casual fun at Maui’s finest.

You may come in dripping off the beach and fit right in with those in T-shirts, tank tops and bikinis.

“I sweep out like 1,000 pounds of sand a day from the floor,” jokes managing partner Seth Kuperman as “The Logical Song” by Supertramp got the sea of diners sipping and eating away on nachos, ceviche, Costa Rican salads and more.

“There’s nothing stopping people coming in dripping wet. The pool is just beyond the low half wall and slats act as drains as water comes through. It’s really laid back with good, but not high-end food.”

Open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. serving breakfast, lunch, happy hour and dinner, the Beach House turns one year old this month after an extensive renovation. It’s the sister property of Dollie’s Pub & Cafe across the Lower Honoapiilani Highway and it rocks at all hours every day.

“We put on jazz in the morning and then the decades variety songs of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s,” says proprietor Jim Anderson. “But the beauty of it is, we have juke boxes so you can change it to hear whatever music that you like.”

“With our remodel, we added like 20 new picnic tables, some are ADA accessible with special chairs,” he adds. “We’ve also put in new floors, a new bar, a new kitchen and most recently pallet wood to make it look more weathered. It’s picnicky. It’s a beach bar. It’s fun!”

For breakfast, or at any time of day for that matter, wake up to the Beach House Bloody Mary with Three Olives Vodka poured into a tall glass along with tomato mix, lime wedge, celery stick, pickled asparagus spear, cocktail shrimp, olives, chipotle meat straw and celery-salt rim.

Originally from Mexico City, Executive Chef Jose Pascual ran the former Jay’s Place in Lahaina and has been on Maui for more than15 years.

“For breakfast, I make French toast out of thick slices of coffee cake that I grill and dust with cinnamon and sugar and top with fresh pineapple, strawberry or blueberries,” says Pascual. “Country fried steak is also popular and so is crab cake Benedict. Pretty soon we’ll launch an ahi Benedict and we’ve got a fresh pineapple boat filled with yogurt and other fruits.”

Breakfast is served from 7 a.m. to noon and the all-day dining menu kicks in from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., so that there is a crossover for just every taste.

For the all-day menu, the Monte Cristo is drawing in rave reviews and so are cooling gazpacho soup and fresh salads from Caesar to Caprese.

“For entrees, 12-ounce, center-cut pork chops come with garlic mashed potatoes and vegetables and fresh catch of the day is grilled, blackened or fried and served with rice and vegetables,” says Pascual, who flips a mean burger, too.

Happy hour runs from 2 to 5 p.m. with $5 sliders, tacos, chips and salsa and more; and you get $3 Bud and Coors, and $1 off well and call drinks and wines.

The bar is raised for optimum viewing of the pool and ocean.

“We have unbelievable views and sunsets here,” says Anderson. “It’s fun for locals and visitors. And you’d be surprised at what you see in the hot tub.”
