Ring out the old Tsunami Nightclub and usher in the new Hawaiian Room at Grand Wailea on New Year’s Eve. Wanna be a flapper? Or a gangster? Dress up and see and be seen in Maui’s newest hot spot.

Just like Don Ho had his own showroom back in the day, Amy Hanaiali’i, Hawaii’s top-selling female vocalist of all time, will launch the Hawaiian Room as her very own on New Year’s Eve.

The five-time Grammy nominee and recipient of 28 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards will take you on a worldly journey from the 1930s in Waikiki, to the 1940s in New York City, where her grandmother performed in the original Hawaiian Room across from the New York Waldorf Astoria, to the 1950s and 1960s of Las Vegas. (See more show details in Maui Beat on Page 4).

New Year’s Eve prices include two glasses of Hanaiali’i wine, pupu stations, party favors, and poppers and hats with a Gatsby theme. Present on tables will be olives and bar mixes. When seated, guests will be served a platter with Kona crab cakes with Maui onion slaw, winter truffle and Hamakua mushroom tart, and local chorizo stuffed dates with local honey.

You also get hamachi poke, ahi musubi and Surfing Goat Dairy cheese croquettes. The VIP seating is at 7:30 p.m. and general admission is at 8 p.m. The show runs from 8:30 to 10 p.m. and then a dessert platter with Kula strawberry pate de fruit and more will be brought to the table. Dance with live music until 1:30 a.m. and be treated to a New Year’s Eve toast of Hanaiali’i’s new Tiny Bubbles Sonoma County Brut combining varietals such as chardonnay, pinot noir and French Colombard.

Across the island at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, Eric Gilliom (Hanaiali’i’s brother) will headline a stellar New Year’s Eve countdown party.

Entry is $150 per person and includes a glass of Moet champagne for a midnight toast. For those with New Year’s Eve Ritz dinner reservations, admission is $75 per person. A limited number of VIP private tables include one bottle of Dom Perignon champagne, dedicated beverage server and tableside canapes.

The Ritz will also be puttin’ on New Year’s Eve feasts at The Banyan Tree, The Terrace and Kai Sushi and will offer New Year’s Day Bloody Mary hangover specials at The Terrace, just when you need it the most. Call 665-7089.

A combined buffet spread for both outlets will run from 3 to 8 p.m. featuring chef’s carved prime rib, lobster and chevre risotto, and steamed mussels and clams. Savor the alaea-salt brined chicken, dim sum station with manapua, shui mai and steamed whole crabs, choice salads and seafood samplers with poached shrimp and oysters on half shell.

As icing on the cake, visit the candy display with tempting offerings such as chocolate and candy apples, assorted mini tartlets, candy-dipped cake bites and more. It is the perfect New Year’s Eve celebration to enjoy with family and friends.
