The Grand Tasting
The highly anticipated Kapalua Wine & Food Festival will be uncorked from June 8 to 11. The 36th annual extravaganza promises to be another spectacular gathering of top winemakers and culinary superstars from afar and near.
The kick-off Grand Tasting gala hosted by www.hawaii.com on the oceanfront lawn of Montage Kapalua Bay will showcase the cuisines from Kapalua resort restaurants and special guests along with renowned wines from around the world.
Dr. Beach just rated neighboring Kapalua Bay as the second Best Beach in America. So on Maui, there’s no better place to throw an outdoor party.
“The culinary creations of inspired chefs of Kapalua are sure to wow seasoned event goers and newcomers alike,” says Karin Sagar, event director.
While you sip a crisp sauvignon blanc, dive into seared ahi on crispy tortilla with lime crema, tomato, avocado and cilantro by Jojo Vasquez of Plantation House, named Best Chef on Maui in the recent Ai Pono Awards by a local magazine. Chef Robert Barrera of Pineapple Grill will serve oxtail tortellini with parmesan, brodo and parsley; while Chef Neil Murphy of Merriman’s Kapalua will tempt you with Kauai shrimp and taro pancakes.
Regions and American Viticultural Areas, aka, AVAs, will span from Paso Robles to Oregon to Baja California.
“Premium Napa cabernets will include Gandona, Nellcote, Peju, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Grgich Hills Estate, Freemark Abbey and many more highly sought after vintages,” says Sagar.
Sip from these and other stellar wines at the walk-around tasting and evening under the stars all on the oceanfront grounds of Montage Kapalua Bay.
The Ritz-Carlton chefs will make Oink Oink in a Box Bun: Crispy pig with pickled baby-root vegetables; and catch of the day with cherry-blossom ice cream, taiyaki fish cones, green tea condensed milk and green tea baked chocolate.
Other restaurants participating are host hotel Montage Kapalua Bay, Honolua Store and Taverna. The “Maui Sugar Squad” will be there with desserts, including B3 A Beach Bunny Bakery, Donut Dynamite, Maui Cookie Lady and Cupcake Ladies Catering Co.
“We’ll have gourmet cheeses by HFM and a specialty champagne tent, strategically placed next to the Petrossian Caviar station,” says Sagar. “The tent will feature an array of premium Moet vintages and a sneak preview of the exclusive Champagne Hale coming this summer at Montage Kapalua Bay’s Cliff House.” Stay tuned.
Also mark you calendars for June 11, when The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua presents the Seafood Festival as the grand finale to the whole weekend.
