Taste of Kohola
Sip local craft beer, listen to entertainment buy a la carte foods at Maui Ocean Center
Imbibe in local craft beer at the Taste of Kohola Brewery from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Maui Ocean Center in Maalaea. The event is a benefit for the aquarium’s Marine Institute and Hui O Wa’a Kaulua.
For the admission price, adults 21 and older may sip two Kohola beers from a choice of six selections and take home a free commemorative glass. You may also buy additional beer at $6 per glass.
During the festivities, explore marine life and listen to five-time Grammy nominee Amy Hanaiali’i, the best-selling Hawaii songstress of all time.
This is a unique view of the Maui Ocean Center’s realm at night. Part of the fun is exploring the coral feeding and the sea turtle stations. In addition, witness dive presentations. And make sure to stargaze with anthropologist-astronomer Rakhal Kincaid. Hungry? You may purchase a la carte foods from a beer-inspired menu at the aquarium’s popular Reef Cafe in the middle of it all.
The menu includes fresh ahi lightly smoked over kiawe wood, topped with calamansi-lime ponzu sauce, shaved watermelon radish and sweet Maui onion. It also features Pineapple Blonde ginger-soy-braised chicken drumstick with papaya salad and garlic-infused jasmine rice — both prepared by the culinary team.
Other food highlights for $10 a plate include grilled Red Sand Ale-marinated bratwurst topped with jalapeno Kohola beer cheese sauce with caramelized onion and sauerkraut. For $6 an order, you may dip doughy grilled focaccia bread sticks into beer cheese.
As far as the event beneficiaries go, Hui O Wa’a Kaulua is a Maui voyaging society with seafaring sailing canoes and educational programs. Maui Ocean Center Marine Institute inspires lifelong stewardship to ensure the survival of coral reefs and sea turtles in Hawaii through science-based efforts and outreach.
Cost is $39.95 per adult. For more details or tickets, visit www.mauioceancenter.com.
