ANNUAL JURIED EXHIBIT AT HUI NO’EAU IN MAKAWAO

This prestigious exhibition gives visitors an opportunity to view current work by local artists in all media. Lynn Shue of Village Galleries Maui is the 2018 juror. The Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts recognizes this exhibition each year through its Art in Public Places program. Opening reception is from 5 to 7 tonight. ‘OUT OF STATE’ MOVIE PREMIERE FUNDRAISER

“Out of State” is the story of native Hawaiian prisoners who are shipped 3,000 miles across the ocean to a for-profit prison in the desert of Arizona. In this unlikely setting, men discover their fierce indigenous dances, inspiring two students to fight to turn their lives around upon release. Showing is at 6:30 p.m. at the Historic Iao Theater in Wailuku. Box office opens at 5 p.m. Tickets are $15 per adult and $8 per child up to 13 years. SCHAEFER PORTRAIT CHALLENGE OPENS TODAY

Schaefer International Gallery at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center present the highly anticipated triennial statewide juried exhibition. The Schaefer Portrait Challenge continues to present the unique ethnic spectrum of Hawaii’s people through the skills of artists and their explorations in portraiture. Invited jurors are Charlie Cohan from Oahu; Linda Bennett from Kauai; and Jennifer Owen from Maui. Admission is free.
