Pure imagination: Schaefer exhibit features student art

A new exhibit at Schaefer International Gallery will showcase artwork from students across Maui starting Monday.

The Young Creatives: Neighborhood Places exhibition at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center gallery will feature works of art produced through the classroom by students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Teachers were asked to guide students to create imagery based on their school’s neighborhood community.

“We are pleased to present the work of Maui students from around the island with their take on the theme of Neighborhood Places” said gallery director Neida Bangerter. “The vibrant mix of paintings, drawings and sculpture express ideas about the topographical areas of our beautiful island and portray communities from Lahaina to Kula.”

All Maui public and private schools were invited to participate in the exhibition. Student artwork is featured from Baldwin High, Haiku Elementary, Iao Intermediate, Kalama Intermediate, Kamehameha Schools Maui, Kihei Elementary, Kula Elementary, Lahainaluna High, Makawao Elementary, Maui High, Maui Waena Intermediate, Pomaika’i Elementary, Princess Nahi’ena’ena, Pukalani Elementary and Pu’u Kukui Elementary.

The Young Creatives exhibit, which takes place every other year, will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 19 (closed May 14). The gallery is also open before Castle Theater shows and during intermissions. Admission is free.

This exhibit is presented with support from Maui County. For more information, visit www.mauiarts.org.
