100 Years Ago

1917 — The onion-growing experiment in the Kuiaha homestead district is of more than passing significance. Hawaii doesn’t have to compete with mainland growers because, if she can grow onions at all, she can mature them well ahead of any part of the continental United States.

75 Years Ago

1942 — Brownie Scouts of Troop 72 Hamakuapoko have collected, cleaned and repaired toys for possible evacuee children. Seniors and Intermediates have collected clothing, newspapers, magazines, string, etc. for the Red Cross and first aid stations. Almost all scouts have learned to knit and are doing their bit in this activity also.

50 Years Ago

1967 — County Attorney Kase Higa said the possibility of the Civil Aeronautics Board approving airline flights between the mainland and Maui “appears to be very good.” Higa said United Air Lines indicated that it will propose flights between Maui and the mainland, and there’s a possibility that other airlines will make such requests to CAB.

25 Years Ago

1992 — Banning materials from county dumps, instituting tax increases and business surcharges to finance recycling projects and using composting as an alternative to new landfills or waste incinerators were discussed at a workshop attended by county officials.

10 Years Ago

2007 — Walgreens has announced that it is expanding to the islands with two locations on Oahu. The drug and sundries chain is also scouting Maui, although a spokesman says there is nothing specific about our island yet.
