100 Years Ago

1917 — Hawaii as a whole may well look to Maui for its production of diversified crops, based on the report of the county agents on the various islands. Potatoes, corn, beans, poultry, eggs, beef, pork, hams, bacon and agricultural seeds are all being produced on a commercial scale by the Valley Islanders, without any noise or flurry over the matter.

75 Years Ago

1942 — A few dog owners have answered the appeal for more dogs to be trained for sentry duty, but many more dogs here could be and should be offered for this work, Mrs. David S. Wadsworth, Maui chairman of Dogs for Defense Inc., announced.

50 Years Ago

1967 — An eleven-fold increase in hotel workers will be required for West Maui in a little over 20 years, according to preliminary projections for the Lahaina 701 master plan. Along with the projected growth of the area comes a serious problem in housing new residents and workers.

25 Years Ago

1992 — County and state officials will be conducting a joint investigation and prosecution in a case involving sand mining and grading damage to a portion of the Hale Ki’i Pihana State Monument in Paukukalo.

10 Years Ago

2007 — A year since two earthquakes shook the Hawaiian Islands, the Piilani Highway along the backside of Haleakala is still closed, and unstable rocks and undermined roadways and cliff sides are waiting to be stabilized.
