1917 — Friends of “the sport of kings” are making plans for a race meet at the Kahului track either Thanksgiving Day or one of the Sundays on either side of that day. The proposition is to have a small meet, with few races, but all of those on the program to be good.

1992 — Returning Kahoolawe to the state without putting conditions on the return could be a gamble that destroys the vision now held by so many in Hawaii, speakers told the Kahoolawe Island Conveyance Commission Wednesday.

2007 — Makawao Hongwanji, which evolved from Paia’s plantation camps and has weathered many changes on Maui, celebrated its 100th birthday this weekend. Several hundred Temple members, former ministers, politicians and friends turned out for the weekend full of events, complete with a celebratory mochi (rice cake) throw from the temple roof.
