Thank-You Letters

Na Hale O Maui would like to thank all of those who participated in the first Na Hale O Maui Golf Tournament recently held at the incredible Makena Golf & Beach Club.

A special mahalo goes out to our volunteers and sponsors, including Karey Kapoi, who graciously donated her time and talent to produce the tournament; and Discovery Land and Makena Golf & Beach Club, our hosts, without whom we would not have had an inaugural golf tournament! The staff at the Makena Golf & Beach Club was outstanding, the lunch was mouth-watering and everyone had a wonderful time helping to raise funds for affordable housing.

Proceeds from the event will support the build-out of 12 new 3- and 4-bedroom homes in Kahoma, Lahaina. The homes will benefit low and moderate-income island families, with a priority given for those who work and/or live in West Maui.

Na Hale O Maui

As a seasonal visitor to Maui, I was agreeably surprised to find clear air restored to this island paradise. The absence of brown smoke from sustained cane-burning practices is a reassurance to asthma sufferers and others who live with allergies in their daily lives.

Finding a way to curb environmental pollution does not simply happen. It takes the skills of dedicated full-time residents on Maui to effect change legislatively. The team of environmentalists headed by Karen Chun, Tina Wildberger and other members of the group, Stop Cane Burning.org. who testified before the Maui Council, carried signs along the highway protesting cane-burning, and performed countless hours of research about the relationship between cane-burning and respiratory illnesses is a testimony to the volunteer activists who put aside personal time to engage in civic betterment.

So, from those of us who yearn for ocean beauty unfettered by hazy, choking fumes, a heartfelt “Thank You!” We, who do not make our homes in such an idyllic environment will look forward to an annual return to Maui with happy memories of a vacation that is restorative and fun.
