100 Years Ago

1917 — One of the most interesting things in connection with the recent Lahaina Liberty Bond sale was the purchase of a $50 bond by a little 10-year-old Chinese bootblack, Roger Leong Chong. This amount represented the little fellow’s total savings.

1942 — Maui’s high schools probably will shorten their school week by one day to enable students in the upper grades to assist plantations in producing food for war.

1992 — Democrats tapped traditional party strongholds to accomplish their first-ever sweep of all nine seats of the Maui County Council. Democrats held a tight grip on precincts in Central Maui, Lanai and Molokai. Republicans, meanwhile, did well in South Maui, Kula and in West Maui from Honokowai to Honokohau.

2007 –The Maui High School Saber Marching Band and Color Guard fulfilled its goal to make its 2007 season memorable by capturing top honors in its division in a prestigious contest held Saturday on Oahu.
