It’s estimated that more than 500 million plastic straws are used and discarded daily in the United States, posing a significant threat to local wildlife.

Maui Ocean Center in Maalaea has joined the strawless ocean movement, replacing its single-use plastic straws with biodegradable paper straws at Seascape Restaurant, Reef Cafe and Coffee Shack.

The new paper straws are compostable as well and take 30 to 60 days to decompose. They are BPA and elemental-chlorine free.

Seascape Restaurant has been platinum-certified as an Ocean Friendly Restaurant by Ocean Friendly Restaurants Hawaii, a Surfrider Foundation program.
