How you can celebrate World Oceans Day, June 8, 2018

• Pacific Whale Foundation will have naturalist-hosted beach cleanup stations from 7 to 11 a.m. at Kealia Pond and Kahului Harbor. Free cleanup kits and data collection sheets will be provided. There will be ocean-themed books for keiki, reusable straws from foundation’s ocean store and Maui Ocean Center day passes.

• Guided snorkel cleanup, 7:30 and 8:30 a.m., Kealia shoreline. Maui Ocean Center’s education and curatorial team will lead the cleanup sessions. Participants must bring their own snorkel gear, rash guard and cutting tool such as scissors or a dive knife.

• Free cruise with reef cleanup, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Maalaea Harbor. Led by certified marine naturalists, guests will conduct a microplastic tow on the way to a snorkel site to clean up litter from the reef. They also will collect, filter and record seawater samples. Space is limited on the free cruise and RSVP is required. Call 249-8811, ext. 1.

• Dinner and a movie, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Seascape Restaurant, Maui Ocean Center. There will be a special screening of the award-winning, eco-conscious documentary “Straws.” The 30-minute film will be followed by a discussion about the role people can play in addressing the issue of single-use plastics and marine litter. Cleanup participants will get dining discounts. For reservations, call 270-7068.

• Youth art contest. Children may participate in the “Pollution Solutions” art contest by submitting responses to the question “How will you help keep plastic out of the ocean and protect marine animals?” One young artist will receive a free snorkel cruise for four people or an ocean store gift certificate as a prize for artwork posted to Facebook.com/PacificWhaleFoundation on or before June 8.
