100 Years Ago

1918 — Maui’s last delegation for the draft left for Honolulu on Wednesday night’s Claudine. Maui’s quota of the last draft was 522. To date 558 men have been sent down, the additional ones being alternates to fill vacancies caused by rejections for one cause or other.

75 Years Ago

1943 — Maui motorists and truck operators today were urged by the local Office of Price Administration to make immediate application for recapping services for tires now worn to the “danger point.”

50 Years Ago

1968 — Plans were announced this week for a Shoop Shoop Hula Hoop Contest for boys and girls, aged 9 to 10, which is being sponsored by the Whamo Manufacturing Co. and coordinated locally by the county recreation division.

1993 — First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and staff at the Hana Medical Center came away from a tour of the center Wednesday with mutual admiration and a better understanding of rural healthcare problems.

2008 — In another sign that Maui’s real estate market is contracting, two would-be purchasers of luxury Wailea condominiums are suing the developer and seeking to get their $350,000 deposits back.
