100 Years Ago

1918 — The new salvage department organized by the Maui Red Cross plans to establish a Red Cross Shop in Wailuku in the old Bailey building, at the corner of Main and High streets, and as soon as possible the place will be fitted up and opened to the public.

75 Years Ago

1943 — Santa Claus will have his hands more than full this year providing half the things that will be wanted for Christmas giving. Money is plentiful and merchandise scarce. Begin right today. Go straight to Paia Store and grab every suitable article you see, when you see it.

50 Years Ago

1968 — Maui residents have contributed $125,000 of the $300,000 raised in the fund drive to complete the Kipahulu Valley Seven Sacred Pools conservation project, it was announced Monday by Dr. Milton Howell, Hana resident and cochairman of the campaign.

25 Years Ago

1993 — With federal funds in jeopardy, Maui County Council members heard pleas Wednesday for an additional $500,000 allowing acquisition of one of the last private parcels at Big Beach in Makena.

10 Years Ago

2008 — Maui veterans will hold a rally from noon to 2 p.m. Friday to protest what they say is an underfunded and poorly staffed Maui Office of Veterans Affairs. Veterans leaders hope to have 40 to 100 veterans and supporters take part in the event outside the State Building in Wailuku.
