Lahaina Galleries announces the return of Academy Award-winning artist Steve Matson for two appearances at its Maui galleries.

Matson received an Oscar for his special effects work created in the movie, “The Life of Pi.” He continues to work in the entertainment industry, and has been part of films such as “Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith,”“Superman,” “Chronicles of Narnia, “Polar Express“ and “300,” to name a few.

As a visual artist, he has found a unique way to blend his animation talents with his art paintings, thus adding actual motion to his works.

These “moving paintings” combine painting, photography, videography, animation and sound effects on USB art sticks for private television playback.

As his website explains: “Steve Matson’s moving works allow us to enter that rarified locale, to be absorbed in the mesmerizing dance of the painted image coming alive, to be immersed in a living environment that challenges the imagination as it moves us through layers of color and form.”

For anyone who has visited New York City and ridden the elevators in One World Trade Center, you’ve experience his work watching “A Time-lapse of New York Over the Centuries” – a truly magical experience.

Matson has completed multiple 10-minute programs, each taking almost a year to create.

Come meet this innovative artist from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lahaina Galleries in The Shops at Wailea at 3750 Wailea Alanui Drive. For more information, call 874-8583.

Matson will also put in an appearance from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday at 736 Front St., during Friday Art Walk. For more information, call 856-3080 or visit www.lahainagalleries.com.
