AROUND THE TOWN . . . Remember the old Chart House’s cool and creamy Mud Pie? On a recent visit to Kihei, I helped to devour Stella Blues Cafe’s own version, packed with Kona coffee ice cream on thick Oreo crust with fudge topping – and it was delectable, a throwback to ’80s comfort food.
“We also have a new Mud Pie Gone Bananas,” says partner Cindy Eiting. “It’s got banana macadamia nut crunch ice cream with a Graham Cracker crust and caramel macadamia nut topping.”
Tsunami Nightclub rocked down Grand Wailea’s house last Saturday and will do it again from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. this Saturday. It opens once in a blue moon, on special occasions and for private groups.
Maui’s top DJs will spin super hot music, there will be cash bar cocktails, and door prize giveaways such dining, spa treatments and two-night stay with $200 resort credits – all at Grand Wailea. Cover charge is $40 per person. Do dress in something splashy.
At 6 p.m. Friday, Ferraro’s Bar e Ristorante will present a five-course dinner, prepared by Chef de Cuisine Nicholas Porreca, with fine pours from an Italian family who has made vino for 30 generations.
“Thirty generations,” you say? It’s true that winemaking by Marchesi de Frescobaldi and his family span centuries. BITS AND PIECES . . . Parent company Hawaii Sea Spirits has launched a plan for several new craft spirits to complement its organic Ocean Vodka, produced in Kula. The product expansion plans include white, gold and dark rums; hand-crafted American whiskies such as White Dog (Hawaii moonshine), oak-aged whiskey and bourbon, the latter aging for three years minimum.
“Our newly expanded craft distillery gives us the ability to produce a variety of new spirits,” said CEO Shay Smith. “We have so many wonderful resources here in Hawaii to create truly unique offerings for the rapidly growing craft spirits market.”
Hula Cookies in Maalaea Harbor Shops will celebrate its 15th anniversary from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday. Witness the Hawaiian blessing by Laki Kaahumanu; enjoy free cookie, ice cream and shave ice; listen to live ukulele and slack key music by 2013 Na Hoku winners Benny Uyetake and Sheldon Brown; and watch a hula dancer.
Owners Sal “Salam” Ballout and brother Sam Ballout will pass out sweet treats. Hula Cookies is one of the mall’s original tenants. Top varieties include macadamia chocolate chip and Kona coffee. Those who attend the Willie Kalikimaka show at Maui Arts & Cultural Center Saturday may savor cuisine by the new Cafe Central in Wailuku. Food and beverage service starts at 5 p.m. Dig into grilled short-ribs, chopped-steak plates; winter vegetables on organic baby lettuces; broiled Mandarin chicken with Asian slaw; and sea bass crusted in cornmeal.
Vineyard Food Co. in Wailuku will offer a four-course feast with seatings at 5:30 and 7:30 Friday and Saturday nights, with 15 percent of proceeds going to benefit Imua Family Services.

IHOP at the Maui Mall in Kahului is open for its regular operating hours, but construction crews are working at night to complete a renovation by Sunday. Owner Ron Wells says he will throw a regrand-opening party sometime in January with fun specials, to boot.
For now, you may enjoy holiday offerings such as classic ham dinners; and raspberry white-chocolate chip pancakes with cream-cheese icing.
Historic Honolua Store in Kapalua is also undergoing renovation, and so operations have been temporarily moved up Office Road to the Village Center. Hours are 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. You’ll find its famous Honolua burgers, grilled and topped with fresh Maui Gold pineapple rings; beer-battered fish and chips; and breakfast burritos. . .
