FOR FOOTBALL FANS . . .  I’m  gearing up for next week’s Scene, in which I’ll write about where to dine on Super Bowl Sunday when the Atlanta Falcons battle the New England Patriots.

But many of us want to watch the game at home or at a friend’s house and that means advance planning on what to eat. Pick up a poke, sashimi or combo platter in Wailuku at TJ’s Warehouse. Just place your order by the Friday before the big game by calling 244-7311.

“We mostly do ahi and salmon sashimi and even hamachi can be requested,” says TJ’s Joel Kawasaki.

“The generous folks at Tito’s Vodka have agreed to donate $1 to Maui Humane Society for every featured Tito’s drink sold,” says Director of Development and Community Outreach Nancy Willis. “The two signature drinks created are the Poi Dog and the Pink Popoki.”

Grab your canine-loving friends, sip a drink and share the Who’s Your Daddy sampler plate with six meats, two corn breads and two large sides such as truffle mac ‘n’ cheese and blue-cheese cole slaw by chef-owner Chris Schobel.

BITS AND PIECES . . .  From 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, palates may travel from Spain to Vietnam for the Beats & Eats month-end, new-moon feast in Kapalua at Plantation House restaurant.

This month’s guest culinarian is Robert Barrera of Pineapple Grill, who will wow with duck tamales; panuchos of stuffed, fried masa with smoked habanero; ensalada pulpo of Spanish octopus with chorizo and shaved fennel; and pumpkin ravioli in sage brown butter. The featured cocktail is the New Moon Dark & Stormy. The restaurant’s Bar Nineteen will be the center of the action and you may groove to songs by DJ Eliza, who rocks the house down.

Oh. . . Wine Not? on Friday will be a fun affair with a theme of berries ‘n’ bacon at the Fairmont Kea Lani’s revamped Luana lounge in Wailea.

While many food-service businesses and eateries on Maui engage in eco-friendly practices, some are on the Ocean-Friendly Restaurants list for using no foam, aka “styrofoam,” and other criteria by Surfrider Foundation.

“We are excited to honor those restaurants that are doing the right thing as leaders across the state, and soon, the nation,” says Stuart H. Coleman, Hawaii manager for Surfrider Foundation.

“With the success of our program in Hawaii and Southern California, Surfrider Foundation will launch the Ocean Friendly Restaurants program on a national level in the spring.”

On Maui, Sheldon Simeon’s Tin Roof in Kahului, Garrett Marerro’s Maui Brewing Co. in Kihei, farmer John Carty’s Honolua Farms Kitchen food truck in West Maui, Kyle Kawakami’s Maui Fresh Streatery food truck, Market Fresh Bistro in Makawao  and Choice Health Bar in Lahaina have all made the list.

L&L Hawaiian Barbecue near Sack ‘n’ Save in Wailuku closed on Jan. 16. A sign tacked on the covered windows reads that “Sugoi Ramen will open soon.” Another Wailuku restaurant has closed. Asian Star has been sold and a couple will open it with another name featuring a Chinese, Korean and sushi bar concept. Meanwhile, Asian Star founder Jason Chau has been traveling around before he thinks about opening yet another Maui restaurant.

Max’s at the Maui Mall in Kahului offers free meals to keiki 12 and younger from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays. “We’re doing breakfasts now,” says Rodrigo Anguiano, supervisor. “We just started breakfast last week with different types of loco mocos and pancakes and our lunch and dinner menu is offered all day, too.”
