SEASONS EATINGS . . . The good news is, Hawaii was just rated as one of the “least fat states in the U.S.,” behind Utah and Colorado. But that doesn’t mean the whole of America bodes well.

“Fat is becoming the new normal in America,” according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. “More than seven in 10 U.S. adults ages 20 and older are either overweight or obese.”

As we head into Thanksgiving and the “over-indulging” period through the New Year, CDC recommends exercise, as lack of physical activity is the leading cause of obesity. Plus, drink lots of water, eat in moderation and make good food choices.

On Thanksgiving, turkey remains the choice du jour. Those who prefer to dine at home will find Dani’s Catering offering a meal to go, but you have to place your orders by Friday. It includes roast turkey, Farmer John ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, combination salad and S&J pumpkin pie. Call 242-8852

“The dinner feeds eight to 10 people,” says family owner Michelle Honda. “Dani’s will be open until 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day.”

Fairmont Kea Lani resort in Wailea also offers turkeys to go for visitors and kamaaina. The price will include a $20 donation to Maui Food Bank. Orders must be placed soon. Call 875-2290.

“We also have a new menu item launching at Ko called sesame ahi tataki,” says Alexis Eaton, Fairmont director of public relations. “It’s sesame-crusted seared ahi with tobiko caviar, ginger, soy and Maui sunflower oil. All of our salad dressings at the Fairmont are now made using Maui sunflower oil.”

Hmm . . . seems like a sustainablet food choice, to me.

Upcountry, Pukalani Superette is offering turkey-day meal packages. The first feeds two to four people for $47.99 and the second feeds six to eight people for $72.99, and you get a free S&J Bakery pie with either package. To order, call 572-7616.

On Tuesdays, Beach Bums Bar BBQ Grill in Maalaea is slow roasting prime rib and serving 12 ounces of it with a nine-ounce lobster tail in a combo meal for $34.95. Owner Dave Mecklenburg says it comes with smoked cheddar au gratin potatoes and steamed veggies. Check out live music nightly as well as happy hour drinks from 3 to 6 p.m. Call Beach Bums at 243-2286.

Maui Prime Fine Foods in Lahaina is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays with free-range turkeys, Snake River Farms Kurobuta ham and Maui Steamer Pots. Call 661-4912.

Word has it that another longtime Maui restaurateur, Roy Dunn, recently sold Koho’s Grill & Bar at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center. Its longtime general manager Gerri Eckart has also retired. New owner is Aaron Placourakis of Nick’s Fish Market, Son’z at Swan Court and Sarento’s on the Beach in Kihei, which will cook up a three-course prix-fixe Thanksgiving menu of lump crab and Kula corn chowder, slow-roasted turkey and dessert. Whatever choices you make, do enjoy the holiday. If you are bringing a dish to a party, you may want to check out the www.mauiveganlife.com website for plant-based recipes to lighten up the overall feast.
