The total of Maui’s new vehicle registrations is up 7.2 percent in the year’s first quarter compared to the same period last year, according to the Hawaii Auto Outlook report sponsored by the Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association.

Through March this year, there were 1,181 new vehicle registrations in Maui, compared to 1,102 last year. New registrations for light trucks were up 1.4 percent, but registrations for the “Detroit Three,” or Ford, Chrysler and General Motors, were down 2.5 percent.

Toyota manufactured the top-selling vehicles in the state and on Maui through March.

Oahu saw the largest increase in new vehicle registrations in the state, up 11.8 percent through March. Vehicle registrations were down 2 percent on Kauai and up 3.8 percent on the Big Island.
