Uptown Service wins merchants award for Maui
Uptown Service in Wailuku was recently named Retail Business of the Year for Maui by the Retail Merchants of Hawaii.
Owner Alvin Makimoto was presented with a Ho’okela award at the Retail Merchants of Hawaii annual conference Oct. 24 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort on Oahu.
Uptown Service, a convenience store and gas station that has been operated by the Makimoto family since 1953, was nominated for the award by Scott Sakakihara of Central Pacific Bank, Kahului Branch.
In 2003, Makimoto purchased the property along Main Street from Chevron and expanded its retail space to include more room for the convenience store, according to the merchants organization.
Other Maui nominees for the award were S. Reeve Designs and Tradewinds Kahana Grocery.
Founded in 1901, the Retail Merchants of Hawaii is a statewide not-for-profit trade association committed to the growth and development of the retail industry in Hawaii, a news release said.
