Feed My Sheep ‘grateful’ for community support

Feed My Sheep received support from a number of organizations during the holiday season. Feed My Sheep is the largest nonprofit direct distributor of food to those in poverty on Maui.

Donations included the following:

* 2,950 five-pound bags of rice from the Maui Hotel and Lodging Association. The volunteers from Feed My Sheep wished everyone a Merry Christmas from MHLA while they passed out the bags of rice to people in need.

* A $1,000 check from the Maui Chamber of Commerce for the support of the ongoing distribution of food to the poor. Feed My Sheep was designated as the honorary charity for the 2012 Maui Chamber Golf Tournament. The donation went directly to purchase food supplies, including perishable and nonperishable items ranging from fresh produce to canned goods during the Christmas season. Pamela Tumpap, president of the Maui Chamber of Commerce, presented the donation check to Feed My Sheep at a ceremony Dec. 18.

* A $1,000 check from Geico Insurance, which was presented to Joyce Kawakami of Feed My Sheep by the Geico Gecko at the Feed My Sheep food distribution in Lahaina on Dec. 13. The donation will be used to purchase food supplies for the six weekly Feed My Sheep distribution sites on Maui.

“Many families from all walks of life are in need of food during these difficult economic times,” said Joyce Kawakami, CEO and executive director of Feed My Sheep. “We are very grateful to the Maui Hotel and Lodging Association, the Maui Chamber of Commerce and Geico Insurance for their continued generosity and support. These much-needed funds and food will help our ongoing efforts to make Maui hunger free. Our friends in the community, whom we have the privilege of serving, know they can count on us not only for physical sustenance but also spiritual support to help manage personal challenges.”
