Malama Pu‘uwai program to focus on healthy lifestyles

Maui Memorial Medical Center will offer its next session of the comprehensive community cardiovascular wellness program, Malama Pu’uwai (Take Care of Your Heart), from Jan. 22 to Feb. 26 at the Lahaina Kaunoa Senior Center.

The six-week program is free and open to the public, however, pre-registration is required and space is limited. The sessions will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays.

The Malama Pu’uwai program focuses on education, healthy food choices, exercise, screening and referrals. The program is aimed at promoting wellness through early detection and modification of cardiovascular disease risk factors.

After the six-week program, three- and nine-month follow-up newsletters will be mailed and six- and 12-month follow-up meetings will be held.

The following are offered free to program participants: health assessment and lifestyle profile; blood pressure evaluation; body mass index; ankle brachial index; laboratory tests; counseling with a registered nurse; 30 minutes of exercise each week; healthy food choices; referrals to health care professionals; education on cardiovascular risk factors; and assistance in lifestyle goal setting and strategies. A healthy meal is offered at each session.
