Whale-watch to benefit scholarships

Tickets are available for the American Association of University Women’s annual fundraiser whale watch, to be held from 4 to 6 p.m. March 3.

This year’s whale watch, which raises money for University of Hawaii Maui College scholarships, is dedicated to Ruth Deichman, an active AAUW member who died Sept. 4. Originally from New York City, Deichman lived on Maui for eight years and helped select candidates for the AAUW’s scholarship program. She also volunteered at the Kalama Heights Retirement Community.

Tickets are $35 and are available from Karen Grafe at 874-5625 or karjog@aol.com, or from AAUW members. Check-in time is 3:15 p.m. at the Pacific Whale Foundation’s store in Maalaea. The cruise features certified naturalists talking about whales, as well as pupu, a cash bar, door prizes, a whale-watch guide and a poster.

AAUW offers three scholarships each year to women who have completed two years of post-secondary education and plan to continue at UH-MC. Donations to honor Deichman and for the scholarship fund are welcome. Checks are payable to AAUW Maui Branch.
