Maui video becomes part of National World War II Museum

A video of Maui residents’ remembrances of Japan’s Dec. 7, 1941. surprise attack on Pearl Harbor is now part of the permanent collection of the National World War II Museum in New Orleans.

The digital video was recorded by Melissa Prince during a Dec. 7 presentation by Paia resident Bill Tavares and other speakers at Kaunoa Senior Center.

In addition to Tavares’ remembrances as a student at the University of Hawaii on Oahu during the day “all hell broke loose,” the presentation included speakers George Kahanu, who was a welder working at Pearl Harbor the day of the attack; Hiroshi Arisumi, a veteran of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and others.
