Cancer patients need rides to recovery
Carol Hjelm is an American Cancer Society “Road to Recovery” volunteer driver from Lahaina, transporting cancer patients to their lifesaving treatments and medical appointments. Without her service, some patients would have no means to get to Central Maui for their chemotherapy or radiation treatments.
Last year, volunteer drivers like Hjelm provided 131 rides to cancer patients on Maui. There has been a rise in requests from West Maui in particular, and as the number of cancer patients increase, the demand requires more volunteer drivers who can help patients who do not own a car, have family support or qualify for other local services and may be too ill to take public transportation.
The American Cancer Society on Maui is seeking more volunteer drivers who can provide their own car and have a valid driver’s license and car insurance. Gas mileage reimbursement is available courtesy of the Pacific Cancer Foundation for all Road to Recovery volunteer drivers.
Cancer patients who need a ride may contact the American Cancer Society at (800) 227-2345 anytime of the day. Potential volunteers can call the Maui office at 244-5554 for more information.
