Haleakala to be topic of presentation on April 3

Author and Maui historian Jill Engledow will speak at the 7:30 a.m. breakfast meeting of the Rotary Club of Kihei Sunrise on April 3. The meeting will take place at the Five Palms Restaurant at the Mana Kai Maui Resort in Kihei.

Engledow will talk about “The Park in Our Backyard,” a short history of Haleakala National Park, the people and events that led to its establishment, and its growth and impact on the island today. The talk will include a PowerPoint presentation of vintage photos.

Engledow is a freelance writer who specializes in Maui history. After working for 17 years as a reporter and editor at The Maui News, she wrote “The Maui News 1900-2000: 100 Years as Maui’s Newspaper.”

Her most recent book is “Haleakala: A History of the Maui Mountain,” which tells the story of the mountain that makes up East Maui, the “crater” at its peak and the national park that protects its pristine lands and endangered species.

The cost of the breakfast is $22. The public is invited. For more information call President Patty Hemmen at 280-8372 or see the club’s website at
