Boating event to be held Saturday

Free safe boating information and services will be available for island boaters from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Kahului Boat Ramp as part of National Safe Boating Week.

The event is being organized by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Team.

U.S. Coast Guard Station Maui is expected to bring its 25-foot response boat to the event.

Among the activities:

* Boaters may trailer their vessels for a free recreational vessel safety exam by the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

* Register kayaks and stand-up paddle boards and receive a free orange sticker (with name and phone numbers) to put on ocean recreational devices, which can help recovery property if lost. The contact information also can help determine whether a search-and-rescue mission is needed or not.

* The Coast Guard Marine Safety Team will have its special equipment to test EPIRBs or yellow safety beacons and to register the device for free. Bring EPIRB along with manual.

* Expired flares may be lit under the training and supervision of the Coast Guard.

* Make an appointment for a free uninspected passenger vessel “six pack” voluntary safety check or a commercial fishing vessel voluntary safety check.

There also will be youth education programs.
