Maui Matsuri contest winners named

Winners of the contests at the Maui Matsuri on May 10-11 – ranging from saimin eating to cosplay – were announced.

The event, celebrating Japanese culture, was held at the University of Hawaii College.

The winners follow:

* Sam Sato Saimin contest – Adult Division, Tyler Orikasa, first; Clancy Wolf, second; and Lani Gleason, third. Children’s Division, Gabe Salazar, first; Mika Suzuki, second; and Kamalani Eldredge, third.

* Iwamoto Natto Eating Contest – Adult Division, Casey Ota, first; Charles Araki, second; Jonathan Forte, third. Children’s Division, Devyn Kochi, first; AJ Bianco, second; and Dean Omura, third.

* Hanafuda contest, sponsored by Hale Mahaolu – Tara Ulep, advance division; Kayla Ewing, beginning division.

* Manga contest, sponsored by A&B Properties – 3rd-5th grade, Alyssa Ferreira, first; Joshua Krueger, second; Jasmine Keith Tunac, third. Sixth-8th grade, Alyssa Fusato, first; Keanna Wright, second; Chayse Tamaki, third. Ninth-12 grade, Sabrina Futch, first; Rhiannon Hernandez, second; Kaili Mossman, third.

* Traditional art contest, sponsored by A&B Properties – 3rd-5th grade, Emma Fusato, first; Sarah Fusato, second; Brandon Kwock-Fukuda, third. Sixth-8th grade, Frances Cabulisan, first; Laura Dodson, second; Frances Cabulisan, third. Ninth-12th grade, Aysha Ishibayashi-Rincon, first; Jovelle Ziela Cabulisan, second; Joselle Cabulisan, third.

* Cosplay contest, sponsored by Sanrio Kaahumanu with contestants dressing up as anime or manga characters – Hallway Cosplay Contest-student division, Anna Maiwa, first; Xin Yun Cao, second; Rachel Inouye, third. Hallway Cosplay-adult division, Marc Cabalo, first; Yvonne Ladera, second; Megan (event officials did not get her last name), third. * Video Game Tournament – Victor Le, first; Anna Maiwa, second; Kainalu Sano, third.

* Booth decorating contests (winners received $100 cash prize and blue ribbon) – Craft Booth, Shinnyo – En Maui. Food Booth, TJ’s Warehouse.

The 2013 Maui Matsuri was presented by the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui. Major supporters were the Hawaii Tourism Authority and the County of Maui.
