Ocean topic of free training this month
A free Ocean Awareness Training session for commercial marine tour operators and the public will be held over several days in June in both Kihei and Lahaina.
The free training offered by the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, along with local conservation, research and educational organizations on Maui, is aimed to provide up-to-date knowledge to visitors about Hawaii’s unique marine environment.
Topics to be discussed will include the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, managing Maui’s dynamic shorelines and what is happening mauka to makai to reduce stress to coral reefs and how one can be part of the solution.
Speakers will include researchers from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and local conservationists.
The sessions will run from 6 to 8 p.m.
The Kihei class will run Mondays and Wednesdays on June 10, 12, 17 and 19.
The Lahaina class will run Tuesdays and Thursday on June 11, 13, 18 and 20.
Participants may attend one or all classes. The deadline to register is June 10.
