The Makani Girls to perform free concert
The Makani Girls, from the Midwest Hula Association in Illinois, will be the featured performers at the free Picnic for Poki concert at 11 a.m. Thursday at Kaahumanu Church in Wailuku.
The concert is presented by Roselani Place and Ola Na Mele Productions.
Born and raised near Chicago, the sisters Brittany, Courtney and Alyssa Lee became curious about their Hawaiian heritage after a visit to Hilo 10 years ago when they were only 4 and 5 years old (two of the girls are twins). Their chosen method of learning about Hawaii is through music; they would spend time singing Hawaiian songs at the dinner table, in the car and at bedtime.
Returning for their first visit to the islands since, the Lee sisters will perform on Maui with their father. They’ll perform traditional and contemporary Hawaiian songs with a touch of the Midwest.
Coffee, water and fresh-baked cookies will be provided by Roselani Place. Attendees may bring a lawn chair or mat and their lunch.
Picnic for Poki is held every third Thursday of the month in honor of the late Allen “Braddah Poki” Pokipala.
