Internship offered at Haleakala National Park
Haleakala National Park and Hau’oli Mau Loa Foundation have joined together to create a internship opportunity for a local college senior or recent college graduate.
The Climate Change Internship position will assist with research and public outreach on the topic of climate change impacts on silversword population viability.
The intern will receive scientific direction and training from Paul Krushelnycky of the University of Hawaii at Manoa and will also work directly with the resources management and interpretation staff from Haleakala National Park to accomplish the goals of the program.
The first phase of this yearlong internship is set to run from Sept. 2 to Dec. 31. Phases two and three are scheduled for Jan. 2 to Aug. 31, 2014, pending continuation of funding.
Preferred candidates are those who are available for all three phases of the internship. The position is full time, generally Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with some weekend work required. The intern will be based at the Summit district of Haleakala National Park.
Through the Student Conservation Association, the selected intern will receive a living allowance of $280 per week and be eligible for an AmeriCorps Educational Award.
Candidates must be Hawaii residents. Housing in the park will be provided by the National Park Service for an intern who does not reside on Maui.
Preferred applicants are those who have graduated within the past two years with a degree in botany, ecology, environmental science, or a related field. Advanced college students (i.e., declared seniors) may apply but must be working toward an undergraduate degree in one of the above fields and be willing to work full time for the duration of the internship.
Applicants must be be in very good physical condition, capable of hiking at least 12 miles in a day at high elevations while carrying a 40-pound pack.
