Japan and Maui Rotary clubs renew friendship

Five Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Sendai, Japan, visited the Rotary Club of Maui June 20 to renew ties of friendship and present pictures and books of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami and rebuilding efforts.

The delegation was led by Makoto Kikuya, international service committee vice chairman, and Shigeo Kobayashi, past president and membership development and attendance committee chairman.

Among the pictures presented was one of students at a new Onagawa Middle School holding a banner with the names of both clubs (in Japanese).

Onagawa Middle School was equipped and supplied through donations and efforts of the Rotary Club of Sendai and a grant from the Rotary Club of Maui. The new school replaces three middle schools destroyed in the earthquake and tsunami.

The banner will be used for cheering on Onagawa Middle School teams at sports events.

While here, representatives of the Rotary Club of Sendai and the Rotary Club of Maui agreed to pursue youth exchanges in the coming fiscal year.
