Auditions for youth orchestra scheduled to begin Saturday
Auditions have been scheduled for the 2013-2014 season of the Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, which welcomes students from all schools and home-school families.
Instruments include strings (violin, viola, cello, bass), woodwinds (flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, bass clarinet), brass (horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba) and percussion (timpani, drums, mallets).
The auditions will be held Saturday for the strings and Aug. 17 for the woodwinds, brass and percussion instruments. Auditions will be in the Baldwin High School band room. Times and audition music for specific instruments are listed at www.mauiyouthphilharmonic.org.
Membership requirements, fees, and rehearsal and performance information are also available on the website.
“The Philharmonic orchestras provide musical development opportunities for student musicians,” said Lance Jo, MYPO conductor. “Students should have a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, a strong commitment to themselves as well as to the orchestra and its members, and the self-discipline necessary to work hard at learning the music up to a performance level. Making music with fellow musicians is an enjoyable experience that can have lifelong benefits for students.”
To enhance and expand the musical experiences for each student on Maui, MYPO offers strings and a full symphonic orchestra, programs that are not offered in the Maui schools.
Rehearsals begin Aug. 24 in the Baldwin High School band room.
The Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra also will offer a beginning violin class, string orchestra and small ensembles in the 2013-2014 season. Call 344-9872 for more information or visit mauiyouthphilharmonic.org.
