Safe Internet use and author book talk events at library

Makawao Public Library will offer free programs in its adult reading section:

* “Safe Internet Computing, Part 1, Essential Software,” 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Conducted by Al Bayless, an Internet computer class instructor at Kaunoa Senior Center, this is the first of a two-part series. Participants will learn how to keep their computers safe from viruses and intruders by using free downloadable software available from the Internet. Although the software discussed is Windows PC-based, Mac users will benefit as well, according to a news release.

* “Safe Internet Computing, Part 2, Safe Behaviors,” 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 9 with Bayless. Participants will learn how safe computing behavior is important to protect their computers and data from hackers and con artists. Topics include phishing schemes, buying online, public computers and hotspots.

Pre-registration is required by calling the library to register for one or both presentations, which are suitable for ages 13 and older. Handouts will be provided to registrants.

* “The Alpha Beta Book: An Introduction to Ancient Greek,” 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 7. Author Keith McCrary will conduct an interactive presentation about his book. Participants will learn the Greek alphabet and numbers and unlock the secrets of Greek pictographs, according to a news release. Signed copies of McCrary’s book will be available for purchase from the Maui Friends of the Library. The one-hour program is suitable for ages 10 and older.

People needing a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation are asked to call the library at 573-8785 as soon as possible.
