Dancers compete at kupuna hula festival
Two groups of Maui senior citizens from Kaunoa Senior Services’ hula classes competed in the 31st annual Hawai’i Kupuna Hula Festival in Kailua-Kona in September.
Events were hosted at Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa at Keahou Bay.
Kumu hula Carolee “Aunty Doll” Aricayos’ halau Ka Pa Hula O Maui, placed third in the kane group competition, dancing to the mele “Iniki Mali’e.”
Kumu hula Lucky Cabral’s Na Hula Kupuna O Kaunoa placed third in the wahine group competition, dancing to the mele” Kahalaopuna.”
Estra Kaeo Luna-Schwartz of Haiku danced to the mele “Ka Makani Ka’ili Aloha” and placed first in the tutu wahine division. Alyka Nakoa-Clark of Wailuku danced to the mele “Haleakala Hula,” placing second in the tutu kane category. Both dancers practice with Na Hula Kupuna O Kaunoa.
Kaunoa Senior Services is a division of the County of Maui’s Department of Housing and Human Concerns.
