MYPO plans to offer new string classes

The Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra is accepting registration for two new classes: beginning violin and string orchestra.

Classes will be held at the Baldwin High School Band Building on Saturday mornings. The 2013-14 session begins Saturday and runs through April 12. Both classes will culminate in a spring concert April 13 at Baldwin High School.

No experience is needed for the beginning violin class, which is open to students in grades 4-8. Enrollment will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis and is limited to the first eight students registered; a wait list will be taken as additional registrations are received. Instruments may be rented at Global Music Supply.

The string orchestra is open to students with at least two years’ experience playing violin, viola, cello or string bass, and who have good music-reading skills. Students should be able to play major scales in common key signatures, and attend all rehearsals and practices.

Both classes will be taught by Rona Landrigan, award-winning educator, performer and new string director for MYPO. Originally from Glasgow, Scotland, Landrigan studied violin at Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England, and completed her postgraduate studies at The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow.

She moved to Maui from New Jersey recently with her husband, after teaching strings and conducting elementary and high school orchestras there for 11 years.

Private lessons are strongly encouraged, but not required, for all students enrolled in both the beginning violin and string orchestra classes.
