DLNR accepting big tree nominations

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources is accepting nominations for the 2014 National Register of Big Trees. The 10 nationally crowned 2013 champions in Hawaii include one on Maui – an aalii (hopbush) at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens.

To learn more about Hawaii’s Big Tree Competition or how to nominate a potential champion tree, call Nicholas Joly at (808) 586-0915. Be ready to provide the tree’s height, circumference and crown spread measurements. The suggested deadline for nominations is Dec. 31, according to Joly.
