Army Spec. Oliver C. de Silva has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, plus physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, the military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.
De Silva is the son of Glenn and Sherri de Silva of Kahului.
He is a 2007 graduate of Baldwin High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 2011 from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Air Force Airman John D. Elan and Air Force Airman Cameron A. McCarthy both graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio.
The airmen completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fit
ness and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the
Community College of the Air Force.
Elan is the son of Romeo Elan of Lanai City and a 2011 graduate of Lanai High and Elementary School.
McCarthy is the son of Melissa and Ronald McCarthy of Kihei. He is a 2012 graduate of Air Academy High School in Colorado Springs, Colo.
