Japanese cultural traditions part of meeting

The public is invited to attend Japanese Cultural Society of Maui’s quarterly meeting at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 27 in the Wailuku Hongwanji social hall.

Attendees will learn to make mochi for New Year’s soup (ozoni), for decorative purposes (kazari mochi) and for dessert (an filling).

Traditional mochi pounding in various styles are planned. Ozoni and various mochi dishes (fried, kinako, etc.) along with a light dinner will be served.

President Brian Nagami will preside over a quarterly membership meeting, followed by a presentation on Japanese traditions observed during New Year. A “make your own” kadomatsu activity will be offered. Costs for the activities are $15 for the mochi sampling and light dinner ($10 for members); and $15 for the kadomatsu and supplies.

A limited number of tickets for the dinner and kadomatsu are available for purchase at Credit Associates of Maui through Friday.
